Feeling the need to take control

This coming September will be five years since my father passed away from lung cancer. Instead of wallowing in the pain, I decided to take this milestone event and turn it into something positive. A few weeks ago I joined popular radio personality Michael Baisden's social network iseecolor. According to him, the premise of the group is to appreciate the world's different races and colors for what they are, and not pretend to be colorblind. I'm not a tremendous fan of Mr. Baisden, but after getting two invitiations to join the group, I folded. The group is not meeting my expectations. 2008 was a sub-par year for me. My jewelry business was not financially viable, I discovered I had a chronic pain condition, I realized that I will never advance at my 9-5 despite earning a degree, and a host of other, smaller disappointments peppered my life here and there. I awoke this morning to the news that the Big 3 Auto bridge loan deal had been killed in the Senate. I didn't know how to feel. The morning news anchors played a piece showcasing how much each of the Big 3 gave during times of national crises, from WWII to September 11 to Hurricane Katrina, and I just became melancholy.
