I think it's more a matter of how you use the words and not their simple usage the problem.

Hi, sorry for being harsh on you ... I have this irresistible urge to correct people when they're incorrect (or i feel strongly they are :)). And you were just throwing stuff out there without any fact checking ... that pushed my buttons. Didn't want to be mean to you ... sorry.
Hmmm the only free software that I can think about at the moment is Blender, which is a 3D program. I haven't used it myself, but I've only heard good things. This makes me want to go on a search to find out what other related free software is available.
When I started out all I depended on was notepad and a really cheap program that was on my computer for photo editing (it was only a few steps up from MS Paint haha). It's definitely a challenge with limited resources, but if you're like me you'll agree it's part of the fun :).
I'll get back to you if I can find or hear of any free tools!
I believe if you are passionate enough, love what you do, and are good at it, that you can attain whatever it is you wish to achieve. Just keep doing what you're doing. Most of everything I learned that landed me this job is stuff that I taught myself over the years and not my education. A good education does help as it builds your knowledge, but applying that knowledge and learning to problem solve is most important. You want to cover your bases with the most common types of software (i.e. - Adobe packages) and have basic knowledge with any type of code. Whether it be HTML, action scripts, lingo or even C++. Also in some cases a Tech Artist will need a background with 3D software. Maya and 3Ds Max are the most commonly used. You kind of have to dabble in a little bit of everything. School allows you access to all these wonderful resources, meet other inspiring individuals and helps you to meet some industry professionals.
That sounds like a really cool way of putting together a video. Well whichever format you go with, can't wait to see!
Typical day at work...a tech artist at my company (there's only 2 of us) is quite different from other companies, and technically speaking I should definitely have a different job title. My day reallllly varies. I could be running around all day talking to various people in the company whether it be artists, sound technician, programmer, QA and so on. I could be in out of meetings giving project updates, investigating and problem solving "hot" issues, brainstorming new ideas for games and reviewing game builds for media content and behavior. I could be creating templates, creating graphics (both game assets and marketing material), optimizing assets and the list goes on. I will also create/write or review and assist writing various documents (i.e. - training guides, process and procedures, various tracking documents and etc.) I assist wherever my skills apply. I'm a bank of knowledge, and really focus on keeping the integrity of the assets with being organized and sharing the knowledge I have with others.
Oh man would I ever love access to Hulu and Pandora...I hate clicking on something and having it tell me it's not available in my area.
I'm great! Just starting up on Sunday here...going to get something to eat soon :). Monk Mode was amazing and I'm still keeping up with a lot of it. Basically each person set themselves specific goals to try to follow for an entire week. Take a look at some of my blogs if you're interested at seeing what I did for Monk Mode. The hard part is continuing after the final week is over, but I have been doing well. I'll have to start writing blogs again.
How are you doing? Seems like things are going well for you. Good luck on your exam!
Learning simple hacking tricks is fun...like sending random messages to another person on the network. We used to all sorts of things in high school for fun...but I can't remember how to do any :(. I'm sure it's not hard though...I think it's through the CMD window.
