My thoughts on reality, after reading a question about Kant, Imagination and Reality on the Philosphy Group
A lot of the discussion also depends on how you determine 'reality'. I like to determine it as a personal viewpoint of every single human being.
But to facilitate discussion about it, you could also go for an average or intersection of the realities of 'most people', or people that belong to a certain group or culture. You could also narrow it down to physical reality as it can be measured by western science and experienced by (almost) every human on the planet, but then you have to leave out A LOT of topics. I mean a fish swims, a tree grows, the rain falls, are reality to virtualy every human, but death being the end of personal existence for example, is not reality for everyone, although it defenitely IS for me. The earth is round vs the earth is flat: was that a change in conception, a change in reality or what would you call it? That what people used to describe as flat, was not that what we today understand as 'earth'. It was a point of view on the environment they experienced.
I don't think it is yet/ever possible for mankind to conceive a definite and correct and unified version of reality. We still will have to move away to other standpoints than where we stand today, and we are still way to different in our mindsets to all accept One Unchanging Truth. We need to aim for that One Unchanging Truth and believe in it, or else we go crazy and can't function, but perfection of it (still) is an illusion. We are slowly gaining terrain though, if you want to see it from a standpoint of western science, we already conquered a lot of Reality from Imaginary Terrain!
On the bright side, if you believe in some religion, it is way easier because they ALL promise you to tell you the truth, the One And Only Truth, so help them god(s), and reality simply is all that what their god/book/spirits/bible/koran/guru/divinity/.. says is true.
