It's for the donator a loss of material, but also a win of a feeling that you helped. But isn't that egoistic? If people help, is it for other people? Or is it in first case to satisfy the conscience?
And you're right, seen as a complete thing, it's the opposite of a loss - it's a big financial win - because our money has a incredibly higher value in poor countries.
